Abstract: Decreasing supplies of manure about four years ago created a demand for a synthetic mushroom compost which would give commercial yields. The possible alternatives of diluting existing supplies, or economising by sacrificing other aspects for an increase in yield of mushrooms per ton, were discarded. A satisfactory synthetic compost would have the advantages of a more standard composition at the start, and availability from stored materials at any time, whereas horse manure varies in composition and is often irregular in delivery.
