Year 1951
Title: Experimental Mushroom Cultivation
Author: P.J. Bels

Abstract:

Investigations m various countries (Lambert, USA, Zycha, Germany, Horticultural Advisers, Odense, Denmark, Edwards, England) have shown that it is very difficult to obtain reliable and comparable data about the yield on experimental mushroom beds.

In our laboratory, of course, we too have met these difficulties actually, we solve them more or less by growing m standard trays of 55 y 42 x 17 cm The manure undergoes peak heating m these trays All experiments are made in six or more replicates In the growing rooms they are placed m piles and rows m a (Youden) Latin square design At the moment we have so-called "dry" growing rooms, which are not insulated, and so called "moist" rooms We have not yet insulated the "moist" rooms properly, but we give an abundant water supply by means of wet sacks suspended over an electric cable, which runs along the wall In this way, we get even and gentle heatmg and high humidity m the air, which is not maintained by the evaporation from the growing trays. The sacks are sprayed with water once or twice a day
