Title: Promising High Quality Apples Evaluated in New England
Author: D.W. Greene
Abstract:
Over 200 apple cultivars and numbered selections were evaluated since 1987 at the University of
Massachusetts Horticultural Research Center, Belchertown, Mass.
This paper describes initial horticultural observations, fruit characteristics, and storage potential of some of the most promising apples.
Among this group are four scab resistant cultivars: Pristine, NY 75414-1, Enterprise, and Goldrush.
Sunrise, Sansa, and Ginger Gold were the best early maturing cultivars.
Midseason cultivars that
showed promise were: Arlet, Golden Supreme, Honeycrisp, Senshu, Yataka, and Shizuka.
Late maturing cultivars that appeared to have commercial potential included: Braeburn, Cameo, Creston, Fortune,
Gala Supreme, Orin and Suncrisp.
