Title: History of the French Hybrid Grapes in North America
Author: G.A. Cahoon
Abstract:
By the simplest definition French
hybrids are a group of grape selections
that originated in France from crossing
European (Vitis vinifera) varieties with
certain North American species.
Selections were from both wild types and
early 19th century cultivars.
The name
French-American hybrids is also frequently used in the U.S. to identify
them.
To further amplify how ambiguous the hybrid grape picture has
become, newer varieties with French
hybrid parentage have also been developed in the U.S. and Canada.
These
are generally categorized as American
hybrids, or American varieties.
