Authors: H. Daubeny, A. Dale, E.E. Moore, A.R. Jamieson, O. Callesen and H. Hall
Abstract:
'Algonquin' is a new red raspberry cultivar
released from the breeding program at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Vancouver,
British Columbia.
The cultivar, which is from
the cross of 'Haida' x 'Canby' was originally
released in 1984 as germplasm, designated BC
72-1-7. This had particular interest in breeding
programs because of homozygosity for the gene
giving resistance to the North American vector
of the raspberry mosaic virus complex.
In recent
years 'Algonquin' has been widely tested in eastern Canada where it produces high yields of
fruit with good processing qualities.
It has also
performedwell in Denmark and New Zealand.
The cultivar is recommeded for trial in regions
in which low winter temperatures may limit the
use of some cultivars.
It may also be of interest
in regions in which there is a lack of winter
chilling.
