Title: Performance of Four Apple Cultivars on Mailing 26 Rootstocks Grown in Intensive Culture with Summer Shearing
Authors: A.H. Thompson and B.L. Rogers

Abstract:
Experience with standard (non-spur type) cultivars on dwarfing rootstocks in high density is still limited in North America. When summer shearing to help contain plant size is to be used, projection of likely performance be comes even more elusive. After waiting for some years for acquisition of land for a new research farm, and with no settlement in sight, we initiated an exploratory study in 1973 to gain experience with several cultivars on M 26 stocks, planted in medium to high density, sprayed with growth retardants, and sheared in summer.
