Abstract:
At present the cultivation area of poppy is 193,000 ha in Afghanistan with 8200 t opium production, providing 90% of the world’s narcotic materials.
Since 1998, formally, with respect to the suitable climatic and ecological conditions, especially in Herat province, saffron cultivation in a project entitled, “A survey on production and marketing saffron” was conducted by RALF (Research in Alternative Livelihood Fund) related to ICARDA (International Center for Agriculture Research in Dry Areas) and with responsibility of DACAAR (Danish Committee for Aid to Afghan Refugees) and Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of Afghanistan in Herat province.
Saffron as a replacement cultivation is supported and extended and is under sustainable development and marketing by foreign governments and institutes.
In the paper, socio-economic data are presented for the first time.
