Abstract:
The twenty two samples of galangal collected from various regions of Thailand are Alpinia galanga and according to their morphological characteristics can be classified into three types: red, yellow and white greater galangal (14 : 5 : 3 samples). During June 2003 to February 2004, each sample was brought into cultivar trial at Pathum Thani Campus with 100 x 50 cm spacing and 18 m2 of plot size.
The results showed that harvest at eight months after planting, almost all agronomic characteristics of red galangal were higher than the others; plant height at 149.5 cm, LAI 8.2, total fresh weight of plant and rhizome, 2.9 and 1.8 kg per plant and the harvest index of 0.4. Regarding the chemical composition of rhizome, all galangal volatile oil content averages 0.27-0.33% and the main component is 1,8 – cineol, at 52.4-66.4%.
