Abstract:
Plant molecular genetics has seen tremendous growth in the past 20 years.
These technology advancements also enabled researchers to conduct molecular genetics research in turfgrass species which are otherwise difficult to study due to their high ploidy levels, perennial growth habit and complex genomes.
In this review, recent development on molecular marker development and linkage map construction in turfgrass species, and comparative genomics studies among grasses are described.
Identification of quantitative trait loci for important agronomic traits is described.
Progress on isolation and characterization of important genes from turfgrasses, along with gene expression profiling by using expressed sequence tags (ESTs) or microarray is also described.
Finally, an overview of research on genetic transformation and risk assessment in transgenic turfgrasses is presented.
