JUICE QUALITY AND YIELD CAPACITY OF BLACK CURRANT CULTIVARS IN DENMARK |

| Abstract:
With the objective to find the best yielding black currant cultivars with the best juice quality 17, 10 and 13 black currant cultivars were planted as one-year old plants in 1999, 2000 and 2001, respectively, at Research Centre Aarslev (10°27´ E, 55°18´N). Planting distance was 3.0 x 0.9 m. ‘Ben Lomond’ was used as control in every planting. Plots consisted of 6 bushes per cultivar, arranged in three blocks and totally randomized inside each block. Plants were fertigated for two years and treated in accordance to standard practices. Flowering, harvest time and machine harvested yield were recorded each year. Juice from every cultivar was analyzed yearly for content of soluble solids, total acids, colour (total anthocyanins) and ascorbic acid. Potential new cultivars must have yields higher than 8 tonnes per ha per year, a colour higher than 300 mg/100 g and Vitamin C higher than 130 mg/100 g. The content of ascorbic acid in juice varied from 96 to 219 mg/100 g and the content of anthocyanins differed from 168 to 613 mg/100g between cultivars. The fluctuations between years were large and the juice content of soluble solids, ascorbic acid and anthocyanis was higher in warm dry seasons. The Russian cultivar ‘Zúsha’, the Polish ‘Tisel’ and ‘Tiben’, the English ‘Black Down’ and ‘1704/124’, the Scottish ‘Ben Tron’ and the Norwegian ‘Narve Viking’ are potential new cultivars for the Danish juice industry and black currant growers. They were high yielding and had satisfactory juice qualities. The control cultivars ‘Ben Lomond’ and ‘Ben Alder’, which are main cultivars in the production, also had high yields and fine juice qualities. | |
