MARKER ASSISTED SELECTION FOR RESISTANCE TO ROOT ROT IN RED RASPBERRY CAUSED BY PHYTOPHTHORA FRAGARIAE VAR. RUBI

Abstract:
Root rot caused by Phytophthora fragariae var. rubi is a major production constraint in all raspberry-growing regions of the world. A (‘Latham’ × ‘Titan’) × ‘Titan’ BC1 population was tested in a hydroponic assay by evaluating root and shoot symptoms. Genetic mapping using molecular markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis identified two major QTL associated with resistance on different linkage groups. Sequence specific PCR markers were developed for these regions and tested on commercially available cultivars for correlations. A success rate of 76% for predicting resistance in these cultivars was shown for each marker. Further testing for predictive value for root rot resistance on 412 individuals from 19 populations was carried out.
