Abstract:
The Czech Republic has played an important part in the creation of many woody fruit cultivars since medieval times. Many landraces were widely cultivated as late as in the beginning of the 20th century. Many of them can be obtained from old plantations. The evolution of these cultivars was spontaneous, resulting mainly from a large density of fruit plants and cultivated plant traditions. Old landraces, representing invaluable genetic material, must be conserved for future generations. The origin may not be known but they were widely grown. These landraces and obsolete cultivars are adapted to the soil-climatic conditions of a particular region. At present their breeding value and potentials are unknown but they may meet future demands. Since local landraces are seldom commercially offered and they are vulnerable to be lost, we started to collect them. This project is organized through pomologists in the Czech Republic, who have a good overview on local cultivars. On the basis of evaluation and verification of cultivar authenticity suitable accessions were chosen for inclusion to the field collections of RBIP Holovousy. According to needs, additional short collecting expeditions are organized to some localities. The interesting and valuable landraces were conserved by in situ and on farm methods. The most significant local landraces are cultivars:‘Karlstejnsky cerveny’ - Red currant, which was selected from the cultivar ‘Heros’; and ‘Karlstejnsky dlouhohrozen’ - Black currant, selected from the cultivar ‘Rosenthal’. The landraces, which were documented as being grown in the past, but were not found during the collecting expeditions, were also noted.
