RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GROWERS ON THE BASIS OF CARBOHYDRATES IN ASPARAGUS ROOTS – DESCRIPTION OF THE ONLINE SYSTEM WWW.ASPARAGUS-INFO.ORG

Authors:   P.J. Paschold, A. Arslan, R. Schäfer, M. Ernst
Keywords:   Asparagus officinalis, Brix-values, CHO, irrigation, dry matter
Abstract:
The German online system 'Asparagus-info.org' assists the grower to make decisions on asparagus cultivation in an objective way, based on the amount of carbohydrates (CHO) in storage roots. This system includes the determination of the concentration of CHO and a model to keep track of changes in root biomass. The inclusion of the root biomass is important as many factors, e.g. increasing irrigation, influence the biomass of storage roots much more than the CHO-concentration. By measuring Brix-values with the quick-test, developed by Wilson et al. (2002) in New Zealand, the concentration of CHO in storage roots can be determined. The numerous methodical investigations on the asparagus root system allowed transferring results found in New Zealand to German conditions. Results of investigations under practical conditions in various areas in Germany have become available since 2001. The first German growers are now starting to use information about the amount of storage-CHO to decide whether to stop or to continue harvesting.
