Abstract:
Eight white asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) cultivars ('Eposs', 'Eros', 'Gijnlim', 'Grande', 'Grolim', 'Mercur', 'Orane' and 'Thielim') from a three-year-old commercial plantation in Northern Greece, were evaluated for earliness, yield, commercial quality and total income during their first harvesting season. Spears were also evaluated for their texture and composition on the 19th and 37th day of the harvesting season. 'Grolim' seems to be the most suitable for the environmental conditions of the region, followed by 'Eros' and 'Gijnlim'. The cultivar and sampling date significantly affected spear texture and composition apart from the nitrate content. A significant interaction between cultivar and sampling date was observed regarding dry matter, soluble solids and toughness of the spear tip. The spears harvested at the end of the harvesting period (37th day) were more tender and had a lower dry matter, ascorbic acid and total soluble phenols content than the spears harvested at the middle of the harvesting period (19th day).
