WORLD-WIDE COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS OF COLORED SHADE NETS TECHNOLOGY (CHROMATINET®)

Author:   R. Ganelevin
Keywords:   photo-selective screening, productivity, fruit yield, fruit quality, ornamental crops
Abstract:
During the last ten years Polysack Plastic Industries Ltd. in partnership with The Volcani Center, Israel, have developed a new technology of using colored nets (ChromatiNet®) to manipulate the vegetative and productive growth of different plants. ChromatiNet® is a series of colored shade nets having special optical properties which improve the utilization of solar radiation by agricultural crops. This technology differentially promotes desirable physiological responses, which determine the commercial value of each crop. This is an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to current labor-consuming methods (such as pruning and thinning) and intensive use of growth regulators and other chemicals. ChromatiNets® enable growers to control the growth and production characteristics, such as branching, branch length, plant height, flowering, rate of produce maturation, and product quality. The colored shade net technology allows adaptation to varying market preferences, with clear economic advantages. The technology is being assessed in an increasingly growing number of crops by researchers, extension specialists and growers around the world, leading to gradual expansion of the commercial use. Growers in more than thirty countries are already using this new technology under different climate conditions.
