Abstract:
The effects of four colors of shade netting (black, blue, gray, red) on plant growth and yield, leaf color, chlorophyll content, variegation, and vase life were evaluated for Aspidistra elatior ‘Variegata’, Philodendron × hybrid ‘Xanadu’ and Pittosporum tobira ‘Variegata’. In general, Aspidistra growth and yield were highest under black netting, with netting color having little effect on vase life.
For ‘Xanadu’, leaf color was lighter green under red netting, plants were taller under blue and gray netting, and vase life was similar under all colors.
Netting treatments influenced Pittosporum plant growth, leaf color, chlorophyll content, and yield, but had little effect on vase life.
Effects varied with crop and netting color and suggests that further research will be needed for other crops.
