PRODUCTION OF ORNAMENTAL CAMELLIA TREE BY CROWN-EXCHANGED GRAFTING

Abstract:
Camellia is a famous woody flower and thousands of cultivars have been selected and bred. Traditionally, production of camellia trees was from small seedlings or early grafting. It takes about 10 years to produce marketable plants and the demand for big trees is high. Therefore, a new method “Rip Epidermis & Rabbet (RER)” has been introduced. Since 1978, we have applied this method to 35 camellia species and the survival rate was over 60%, and the grafting survival rate was over 90% for more than 100 camellia varieties (C. japonica & C. sasanqua etc.) while with Camellia oleifera as stock. Some ornamental camellia trees have been produced according to their tree shape, leaf and branch pattern, flower shape and color or blossom date.
