Abstract:
The flowering and fruiting habits and biological characteristics were studied systematically with a 9-year-old special strain derived from the cross between Pingyi Tiancha (Malus hupehensis var. pingyiensis Jiang) and Zha’ai Shandingzi (a dwarfism mutant of M. baccata (L.) Borkh.). The controls in the experiment were the same year-old Pingyi Tiancha plants mainly and the normal M. baccata plants.
By the comparison and analysis, conclusions were drawn as follows: (1) Of the special plant, the average fruit number per inflorescence was 1.38, the average fruit weight was 0.41 g, the average fruit length and diameter were 0.77 cm and 0.90 cm, the average seed number per fruit was 1.15, one thousand seed weight was 4.4 g; which accounted for 31.87, 46.59, 76.24, 75.00, 37.10 and 37.29% compared to the same traits in Pingyi Tiancha plants; and accounted for 35.57, 51.25, 76.24, 76.27, 25.56 and 66.67% in normal M. baccata plants.
All values above items were obviously smaller or less than those of the controls.
Moreover, the fruit of the special strain had no fruit dot, less wax, and only 3-4 locules per fruit. (2) The fruit set percentage in the special strain was 67.4% in May 16 (2 weeks after full bloom), and then it decreased to 19.8% in September 18 (fruit maturity period); the seed aborting percentage was 47.32% in June 2 (5 weeks after the full bloom), and then increased to 87.33% in October 2 (fruit harvest period). These characteristics showed that the fruiting ability of the special strain was poor, the physiological drop was very severe, and the seed-aborting phenomenon was very evident.
The possible forming course of the special strain and its possible genetic background were discussed.
