Abstract:
Ground-cover chrysanthemum grow well at 18-2l°C, but they suffer from diseases and pests easily, and even cannot bloom in the hot summer of Southern China, where the daily average temperature above 35°C lasts for many days. In 2002, 16 cultivars, introduced from Beijing Forestry University to Wuhan, a sweltering city, were studied for their heat tolerance. After their morphology, properties of growth and development, resistance to diseases and pests had been observed continuously for 3 years. A comprehensive evaluation on the 16 cultivars was carried out according to the classification criterion for the characteristics of ground-cover chrysanthemum cultivars. The results showed that the ground-cover chrysanthemum cultivars most suitable for open plots in the hot environment in Wuhan were 'Luojinqian,' 'Meiaihuang,' 'Xinhuang,' '9718,' and 'Xinhong'. The conductivity, the contents of proline and chlorophyll of the 5 cultivars under the different high temperature stress (25, 36, 40, 44, 48, or 52°C) were measured and the indexes can be used to identify heat tolerance of chrysanthemum. The sequence of the 5 cultivars for heat tolerance from strong to weak is '9718'> 'Luojinqian'> 'Meiaihuang'> 'Xinhuang'> 'Xinhong'. The studies lay a foundation for the research of breeding new heat-tolerant cultivars of chrysanthemum.
