PERI-URBAN VEGETABLE SYSTEM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES?

Author:   M. Ali
Keywords:   vegetable system, rural, upland intensive, vegetables, leader, technology, competitiveness
Abstract:
Despite the long history of the peri-urban system to provide fresh vegetables to cities, recently serious doubts have been cast on the ability of the system to meet the new challenges posed by changing economic conditions and market demands for food quality and safety. This paper argues and provides empirical evidence that the system has been the leader in technology adoption and is best suited to meet new challenges. The system is most competitive in supplying vegetables to cities compared with its counterpart rural and upland systems, and has several other multifunctionalities. The changing economic conditions are transforming the peri-urban system which will have profound impact on the rural system. With appropriate policy support, the system will pull up the rural system to its level.
