GROWTH OF SPINACH UNDER ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING AFTER NIGHT-BREAK TREATMENT AT INTERVALS OF SEVERAL DAYS

Abstract:
We tested the use of night-break treatments at intervals of two or three days for their ability to promote the growth of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) without causing premature bolting. Four spinach cultivars were grown in growth cabinets lit by fluorescent lamps. Night break was performed by irradiation with an incandescent lamp for 2 h around the middle of the dark period every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (three-times-per-week treatment) or every Monday and Thursday (twice-per- week treatment). Both treatments promoted the height, weight, and leaf area growth of all spinach cultivars tested. No severe bolting enough to reduce the plants’ commercial value occurred in either treatment. Thus, a night-break treatment using weak light at intervals of two or three days appears to be an effective method for promoting spinach growth under artificial lighting.
