Abstract:
Eleven cultivars of cocktail and round tomatoes Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. were evaluated to compare growth, soluble solids, titratable acidity, firmness, carotenoids, skin color, and yield. The growth of 'Temptation' and 'Aranca', cocktail tomatoes, and 'Flexxa' and 'Brilliant', round tomatoes, was better than in other cultivars. The growth of the round tomato 'Tabare' was weak in the early and late stages. The fruit weight of cocktail tomatoes ranged from 32 to 60 g, and that of round tomatoes was 92 to 127 g. There was significant difference in the total yield of round tomatoes. Cultivar yield depended on the number of clusters per plant. The number of trusses with cracked fruits was higher in cocktail tomatoes than in round ones. The soluble solids of 'Aranca', titratable acidity of 'Compari', and firmness of 'BS6205' and 'Tabare' were higher than the values for other cultivars. The lycopene and β-carotene contents were different among cultivars. Lycopene was not detected in the 'BS6205' a yellow-fruited cultivar. The Hunter spectrophotometric “a” value of the tomato skin decreased according to the position of the fruit on the truss.
