POLLINATION AND POLLEN GERMINATION OF SOME NEW PLUM CULTIVARS

Authors:   S.H. Hjeltnes, L. Nornes
Keywords:   plum, Prunus domestica, pollination, pollen germination
Abstract:
Studies of pollen, flowering time and fruit set after pollination in the cultivars ‘Avalon’, ‘Excalibur’, ‘Jubileum’, ‘Reeves’ and ‘Reine Claude Souffriau’ showed that ‘Avalon’ and ‘Reeves’ had low amount of pollen and poor germinability. ‘Reine Claude Souffriau’ and ‘Excalibur’ had abundant pollen and a high germinability while ‘Jubileum’ was in between. ‘Avalon’ flowers early and the best coinciding flowering and high fruit set was observed with ‘Mallard’ as pollen cultivar. ‘Reeves’ and ‘Reine Claude Souffriau’ flowers later than the other cultivars in most years, and ‘Reine Claude Souffriau’ was a good pollinizer for ‘Reeves’.
