THE CAUSE(S) OF GROWTH DECLINE OF PISTACHIO TREES IN THE SOUTH OF KHORASAN

Abstract:
Over the past two decades, commercial pistachio orchards (Pistacia vera L.) have expanded dramatically in the south of Khorasan province. Growth decline of pistachio trees is a serious problem in many regions. In order to investigate the edaphic cause(s) of pistachio decline, a 19 years orchard was selected in the Bimorgh of Gonabad. Physico-chemical properties of soils were studied by excavating 6 profiles. Results indicated that, there is a hardpan at the depth of 40-50 cm. Because of the occurrence of the hardpan, the soils are shallow, root extension is inhibited, and there is insufficient supply of available nutrients. Accumulation of salts is another problem
