Abstract:
In Spain, the traditional varieties of early-flowering and self-incompatibility are being displaced by new cultivars of late-flowering and, in most cases, self-compatibility. The application of traditional pruning is causing serious formation defects in many of the new intensive plantations. In this work the pruning training young tree criteria and growth habits of 13 cultivars of almond tree of late-flowering have been studied. The study of the growth habits was carried out during the first year, without having executed pruning intervention; the answer to the pruning was studied in the second year, implanting two pruning intensities, high and low. A very diverse behaviour has been observed among the analysed cultivars, although most have presented some inadequate vegetative characteristic that force to execute severe pruning to get good structures of the trees.
