EFFECTS OF 2-YEAR STUDY ON THE LOCALIZED PLACEMENT OF FERTILIZERS ON THE YIELD OF ALMOND

Keywords:   almond (Prunus amygdalus), foliar spray, organic fertilizer, fruit quality
Abstract:
This experiment was conducted for 2 years in order to determine the effects of localized placement of chemical and organic fertilizers on the yield and fruit quality of 10-year old almond cv. “Mamaei” during 1999-2001 in Iran. During the first year, six treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Treatments were as follows: T1 = fertilizer application based on the farmers’ conventional method (control); T2 = localized placement of chemical and organic fertilizers based on Soil and Water Research Institute recommendations; T3 = T2 + foliar application of urea, boric acid and zinc sulfate in the autumn; T4 = T3 + foliar application of urea, boric acid and zinc sulfate in the spring; T5 = T2 + 2 additional sprays of a liquid complete fertilizer and T6 = T2 + foliar application of urea, boric acid and zinc sulfate in the autumn and spring + 2 additional sprays of a liquid complete fertilizer. But, for the second year, nitrogen fertilizers were applied in all treatments. Finally, the effects of treatments on the yield and fruit quality indices were investigated. The results revealed that there was a significant difference at 5% level between the yield from localized placement of chemical and organic fertilizer treatments compared to control. For both years, the highest and the lowest yields of 5.390 and 2.310 kg/tree were obtained with treatments T6 and T1, respectively. Results demonstrated that there was a significant increase in the weight of 100 fruits and kernels, and in kernel weight percentage obtained with the localized placement of fertilizer treatments as compared to the control.
