PISTACHIO MATURITY PREDICTION BY NUT DENSITY

Authors:   J. Zhang, P. Weir
Keywords:   Pistacia vera, ripen, distribution, kernel, shell
Abstract:
Maturity prediction is important in Australia pistachio production. Two methods for nut density measurement were developed. Results from the method for individual nut density test showed a relationship between nut development and nut density. Harvest will be started about 5-6 weeks after a “turn” point showed from the density monitoring test. This method also described variation of nut densities within each sampling date. The method for a group nut density measurement showed good prediction results for nut maturity. The authors also discuss more accurate prediction at the final stage as well as shell density, nut volume and percentage of kernel weight in different stages.
