TECHNIQUES OF CHERIMOYA CULTIVATION IN SPAIN

Abstract:
The paper presents irrigation, fertilisation, soil management, pruning, pollination, and insect control used in cherimoya cultivation in Spain. Different pruning techniques for increased production are presented in detail. Several of them allow trees to be kept permanently under three meters height. A summary of the work on pollination, done in “La Mayora” Experimental Station over the last 26 years, is discussed. As a result of the positive results obtained, most commercial producers now use manual pollination. In this way, a comparable yield is obtained to that of a good natural pollination but with a better fruit quality. Natural pollination can be improved in Spain by interplanting corn, which spectacularly increases the population of the pollinator Orius spp.
