ISHS Acta Horticulturae 497: First International Symposium on Cherimoya

PRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOUR OF FRUITING WOOD IN THREE SYSTEMS OF TRELLIS SYSTEMS IN CHERIMOYA (ANNONA CHERIMOLA MILL.)

Abstract:
Due to the limited knowledge of the fruiting habits and vegetative development of the cherimoya (Annona cherimola Mill.), and to the importance these have in efficiently carrying out cropping activities, a research project on the reproductive behaviour was carried out. The number of fruits was evaluated in new branches belonging to different categories i.e. very weak, weak, moderately vigorous and vigorous in 13 year-old trees trained in open vase, pyramidal axis and free conduction system. It was found that in the trees subjected to conduction, the weak and moderately vigorous categories are those that present a bigger quantity of fruits, whereas in the trees without conduction, there is no significant difference between the different categories. Similarly, the effect of the different categories of vigourless on the weight of the fruit was determined showing this parameter to be only of effect in the open vase system where the vigorous category showed fruits with a higher average weight. An important result was the fact that the categories very weak, weak and moderately vigorous show a bigger fruiting index, whereas the very weak category whilst presenting a smaller number of buds, shows a more limited productive potential than the categories weak and moderately vigorous.
