TRANSLOCATION OF CHERRY LEAF ROLL VIRUS (CLRV) IN JUGLANS REGIA

Authors:   J. Aramburu, A. Ninot, N. Aletà
Abstract:
The infectivity of cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV) on different walnut rootstock-scion combinations depends on factors such as walnut species, CLRV isolate and type of infection. The virus translocation through J. regia tissues, after mechanical inoculation, is very often slow and erratic. Some reports refer no uniformity response even three years after inoculation.

In 1993 we started a study of CLRV translocation evolution in Persian walnut using the ELISA-DAS technique. In May, one year old virus-free seedlings were budded with infected patch with or without bud. The use of infected buds was clearly the most effective way for speeding the inoculation. CLRV was present in the whole plant from the top to the roots. In plants inoculated by patch bark without bud, the virus remained close to the inoculation site after two years.
