BACTERIAL BLIGHT OF WALNUT: A STRATEGY FOR RESEARCH |

| Abstract:
Reduction of economic losses to the bacterial blight of walnut can be obtained through actions directed at reducing the population density of bacteria, with walnut genotypes having a higher resistance to the pathogen, and by manipulating the physiologic state of the trees and thus influencing their response to the bacteria. The success of the experimental work on any of the above mentioned approaches depends on reliable and reproducible methods for recording disease intensity. Some pathometric methods are discussed from the point of view of their adequacy and limitations for the different tasks. The need for a better understanding of the physiologic mechanisms of walnut that may play a role on its resistance to infection or to the development of the disease is stressed. This knowledge may have implications both on the protection of the currently cultivated varieties and on the characterization and evaluation of the produce of breeding programs. | |
