THE PRINCIPAL VARIETIES OF WALNUT FROM ROMANIA |

| Abstract:
In Romania, the walnut orchards are wide spread in most of the areas suitable for growth trees. These orchards are formatted by plants which are seedlings, so the production is heterogeneous and the quality is variable. There are some valuable biotypes, some of them are better then well known cultivars. During the last 20 years, Research Institute from Pitesti-Måråcineni and some of the research stations developed a study for establishing the assortment suitable for growing in Romania, from local varieties of walnut. The varieties were obtained using two methods : individual selection of the valuable biotypes done in different areas and controlled crosses. There were named 16 cultivars using individual selection and by controlled cross. All of the cultivars were studied in experimental plots with 12 varieties from Europe and USA In the ecological conditions of Romania, local cultivars like 'Geoagiu 65', 'Sibisel 44', 'Germisara', 'Jupânesti', 'Muscelean', 'Argesan', 'Susita' were productive, resistant to diseases and have high kernel-shell ratio, high quality of nut and kernel. The autohton cultivars have some qualitative characteristics of fruits and a good adaptability to the environment better then the French cultivar 'Franquette'. | |
