CULTIVAR CHOICES FOR CALIFORNIA WALNUT GROWERS

Author:   Lonnie C. Hendricks
Keywords:   Walnut, Juglans regia, hectares, USA, precocious, kernel quality
Abstract:
Hartley is the most extensively planted walnut cultivar in California. It is expected to maintain this dominant position for the near future. The Chandler will remain a top choice for new plantings, and Tulare is expected to be the next cultivar to become popular. Vina will remain popular due to its high yields and profitability. The old cultivars generally have lower quality, lower yields, and more insect and disease problems than do the newer cultivars, and they will decline in popularity.
