VARIATION IN NUT, KERNEL, AND SHELL CHARACTERISTICS OF JUGLANS NIGRA L.

Abstract:
Measures of nut length, diameter, and weight, as well as of kernel and shell weights, from 156 Juglans nigra L. trees in a southwest Missouri (USA) plantation were analyzed using correlation and regression techniques. Correlations between one measure of nut diameter and nut weight (r=0.868) and between nut weight and kernel weight (r=0.705) were statistically significant (p<0.0001), suggesting that nut diameter could be used as a selection criterion for heavier nuts with larger nutmeats. The correlation between nut weight and shell weight (r=0.962) was also very high. Scatter diagrams of nut variables evaluated are presented in a unique matrix format.

From individual tree nut production records over an 8-year period, it was observed that a few trees begin nut production at an early age (7 years) and bear nuts regularly. The potential for selecting of black walnut trees for gain in nut production is discussed.
