ISHS Acta Horticulturae 195: The Scientific Management of Vegetation in the Urban Environment

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FLORAL GRASSLANDS

Author:   T.C.E. Wells
Abstract:
The developing interest in the use of wild flower mixtures in amenity horticulture in Europe is outlined. Data are presented on the quantities of wild flower seed sold in the UK in 1982–83, together with an analysis of the composition and relative popularity of the various mixtures. The results from a survey of 19 sites where wild flower seed mixtures were sown in the past 3 years are analysed to identify those species which establish successfully as well as to note those species which failed. The importance of an adequate seed-bed and subsequent management for the success of wild flower mixtures is stressed.
