EFFECTS OF LOW PRESSURE ON STORAGE LIFE AND SUBSEQUENT KEEPING QUALITY OF CUT ROSES

Abstract:
Cut flowers of 'Tanbeedee' Belinda ®, 'Merko' Mercedes ® and 'Sweet Promise' Sonia ® roses were stored dry, wrapped, for up to 42 days at either normal atmospheric pressure (NPS) (1o1.3 kPa (76o mmHg)) or low pressure (LPS) (3.2 kPa (24 mmHg)). Storage temperature was 2°C, air humidity 98% RH and air change 1.o volume per hour. Upon removal from storage the keeping quality of the flowers was recorded at 21°C, 6o% RH, 29 W/m2 emitted light, 14 hours day length and an airchange of o.3 volume per hour.

LPS doubled the storage life compared to NPS, which doubled the storage life compared to a supposed normal cold storage.

'Tanbeedee' Belinda ® roses could be stored for approximately one month at low pressure and still maintain a consumer-satisfying subsequent vase life of approximately one week.

'Merko' Mercedes ® and 'Sweet Promise' Sonia ® could also be stored for one month and still be satisfactory regarding the flowers (petals), however, their leaf quality was deteriorated.
